2 Thessalonians 3:6-13, Luke 21:5-19, Hope and Faith for the End Times

For centuries, Christians have been attempting to use the scriptures to calculate the time of the second coming of Christ, and always without success. This practice began extremely early. Even within our New Testament, for example in Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, which was written only about ten years after Jesus’ crucifixion, we see an attempt to come to terms with this expectation.

In Luke’s community, there were apparently some who misinterpreted the hard times they were going through, especially the persecutions that sometimes broke out against the Christians. But Luke is concerned that they do not interpret a time of severe trial as a sign of the imminent end, and just give up hope and give up their mission of spreading the Gospel of Christ.

Today’s lesson challenges us to ask the question. That is not “When will that day come?” nor “What will be the manner of its coming?” or even “Will it ever come at all?” but rather “In view of the certainty of that day’s coming, how should we live?” And the answer to that question is to live in faithfulness to God. In obedience to God’s will. In bearing faithful witness before “kings and governors” for Jesus’ sake. IL-WOONG.

Connect with people in Jesus;
Build each other up in faith; and to
