Luke 19:1-10,  Zack’s Zeal: To See and Be Seen

This Sunday, we are going to look at one of the well-known Sunday school stories: Jesus has an encounter with Zacchaeus, who is a chief tax collector and very rich. But in spite of his position and wealth, Zacchaeus has two big problems. 1) He had no friends. Everybody hated him, and he knew it. It probably hurt him very deeply when people called him a thief for taking their hard-earned money in taxes and a betrayer because he worked for the Roman government. 2) His other problem was that he was considerably shorter than most of the other people in town.

The day that Jesus came to town, Luke tells us there was a huge crowd gathered to greet him. Zacchaeus wanted to see who Jesus was. Since Zacchaeus was short and couldn’t see over the heads of the people, and since he knew that the people were not about to let him get in front of them so he could see, Zacchaeus ran ahead to climb a sycamore tree to just to catch a glimpse of Jesus as he passed through town. We don’t know what Zacchaeus was thinking, yet all we know is the result of this encounter: Zacchaeus was changed.

After a simple invitation from Jesus, Zacchaeus offered to return money to anyone he had defrauded and to give half his possessions to the poor. Zacchaeus was wealthy, crooked and greedy. However, his faith in Jesus changed the way he lived his life. How is your faith being demonstrated in your life?  IL-WOONG.
