2 King 5:1-14, Mark 1:40-45, When God is at Work

Today’s first lesson is the story of the healing of Naaman, the great high and mighty officer of the Syrian army and his miraculous healing from the dreaded disease of leprosy. However, the healing comes in a way that Naaman at first finds to be rather humiliating and lowly. The Gospel is, once again, another healing story from Mark. The connection of these two texts has to be that they both involve people suffering with leprosy.

It seems to me that we are very much like them in the lessons. When we are in the midst of a crisis, when we are hurting, it is very hard for us to see that God is with us in our life. But just like the leper, while he was at the lowest possible point, God is in our lives too. What we can also learn from this story is that our suffering moves God’s hand. Our Lord is willing to heal. Even in the depths of physical misery and death there is spiritual healing.

As we pray this week, let us receive God’s gift of new experiences and healing. Let us embrace God’s wonder as it flows from the hearts and lives of others and let us live with integrity and joy into the newness of life that comes with opening our hearts to God’s Spirit and God’s way in the world.  IL-WOONG.
