Matthew 10: 34-42, The Cost of Discipleship

For Christians, the sacrifices we make are the revealing sign of a mature commitment. To be a disciple of Christ, there is the cost (vs. 38-39). For instance, Jesus’ disciples had to suffer as they accomplished their tasks after Jesus’ death; and no greater example can be found than the life of Paul. Paul was going to Damascus with a sword in his hands to persecute the Christians; he found Christ on that road and suddenly the sword was turned upon him. His life was turned upside down; He was suddenly cut off; Cut off from his career and his family.

In the text, Jesus taught us that we are to be hospitable to strangers (vs. 42). In fact, showing kindness to strangers is what the Gospel is all about. We need to keep reminding ourselves of that. It’s not about us; it’s about them! Hospitality toward one another is a sign that Christ is welcome. And where Christ is welcome all things are possible. Even the swords that divide us can be replaced by hospitality.  IL-WOONG.
