Today my message is entitled ‘Divine appointment with Samaritan Woman’ from

John 4:5-30; 39-42.

There are a few things, which suggest this meeting between the Samaritan woman and Jesus was organised by God. The meeting happened during the hottest part of the day, when people did not normally collect water from Jacob’s well. The normal time would have been early morning or late afternoon. Jesus happened to be travelling from Judea toward Galilee via Samaria and stopped to rest at the well, where He met up with the Samaritan woman and He asked her for a drink of water. The other strange happening was this was not normally the way that Jews would travel, as they wished to avoid passing through Samaria.

It is obvious from the conversation that ensued that Jesus was outlining her current sinful way of life with the view to having her confess that she was a sinner, and in order to become a follower of Jesus, she needed to repent of her sin, so she could receive God’s forgiveness.

The Holy Spirit was then able to be released into her life and on one of very few occasions during Jesus’ ministry on earth, He revealed to her that He was the Messiah and that He was in fact God, as He referred to Himself as ‘I am,’ one of His names He told Moses in Exodus.

When she returned to the village, she called the townspeople together and they met in a public place, were she was able to evangelise the crowd. They invited Jesus along and He stayed with them for two days, where multitudes turned to follow Him.
