2 Corinthians 8:1-15, Thanks + Giving: The Grace of Generosity

In today’s text, Paul told the church in Corinth to finish collecting donations they had started for the poor Christians in Jerusalem. He wanted them to understand the blessings of giving. Paul used other churches, like those in Macedonia, as examples of how to give.

The Macedonians gave generously, even more than they could afford, as seen in verses 3 and 4: “they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own…” This is a model for Christian giving: to give according to one’s means.

Despite suffering and extreme poverty, the Macedonians gave joyfully and generously, as noted in verses 1 and 2. Their hardships resulted in a wealth of generosity.

They gave abundantly and sacrificially because “they gave themselves first of all to the Lord” (v 5). This kind of giving is meaningful and eternal. The key message is to first dedicate yourself to Jesus Christ, and then use all you have for God’s glory. When you do this, you can give abundantly and sacrificially, finding true wealth in giving.  IL-WOONG.
