Matthew 14:13-21, God Will Provide What is Needed

Today’s gospel lesson is one of the well-known stories about Jesus. All four of the Gospel writers include it in their narrative of Jesus’ life. This parable is about more than just feeding people. The parable teaches us that when we have received the compassion of Christ and give it freely, the compassion we give ripples out farther than our ability to explain it or imagine its impact.

In the parable Jesus indicates to the disciples to give the people something to eat, so the disciples are the ones to give the food to the multitudes gathered. We see Christ’s empathy for the people and we see the transformative power of Christ that happens when people break bread together.

Christ calls his church to a ministry of compassion today, meeting the world’s needs in his name. It’s not a question of resources because God will provide the resources. Indeed, God has already provided the resources. Ultimately, it is a question of how committed we are to Jesus Christ. All it takes is someone to step forward with their willingness to share their fish and loaves, no matter how tiny and inadequate they may seem. When we act to meet the world’s needs, God will provide what we need. IL-WOONG.
