Hebrews 11:29-12:2Who is Your Hero of Faith?

We all have heroes/heroines, those people who have influenced us on a deeper level either with their lives or what they have done with their lives. Paul understood the importance of both heroes and stories in the life of our faith. That’s what he’s writing about in the passage today.

First, Paul says “we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses.” (vs. 1a) And that’s the whole purpose of his listing all those people from the Bible and briefly telling their stories. By virtue of being in the Bible, they are part of our story. Second, Paul makes a leap of faith here he says: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.” (vs. 1b)

Paul also says we’re called to do the hard work of faith. He says, “let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (vs. 1c) That race is the race of faith. It’s a race only in the sense that we have to prepare for it, just like all athletes prepare for their events like the Olympics. And then Paul says we should focus on the winner, Jesus, “the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” (vs. 2) He has already run the race. He’s the one against whom all other races are rated. He’s already run the race and won. We’re called to follow.

Life is forever changing, but Jesus is the constant we can always trust while we’re on this journey of life and faith. Jesus is the Chief Hero of the Faith. IL-WOONG.

John Anderson is joined by mathematician, bioethicist and Christian apologist Professor John Lennox for a profound conversation centered on the current and future impacts of artificial intelligence technology.  They discuss the shortcomings of science in the search for universal truth, the factors behind rising secularism in the West, China’s rapid AI implementation, our growing desire for immortality through biomedicine and the true meaning of ‘faith’.  In 2020, Lennox published 2084 – Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity, which covers key developments in technological enhancement, bioengineering and AI.  In the book, he discusses the current state of AI – its benefits, dangers, and future implications.
