Matthew 16:13-20 / Who Is Jesus to You?
“Who do people say that I am?” Jesus asked his disciples. They offered various answers – John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. But then Jesus made the question personal: “But who do you say that I am?” Peter responded with his great confession: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
People throughout history have understood Jesus in many different ways. He is recognised as a historical figure, a remarkable teacher, a prophet, and someone whose life and teaching have profoundly influenced the world. Yet Christian faith makes a much greater claim: Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, our Saviour and Redeemer.
In Jesus, God did not remain distant from us. God came into our human experience, meeting us where we are and reaching out to us in love. Through Christ’s life, death and resurrection, we are brought into a relationship with God.
But Jesus’ question is not simply about what history, other religions, the Church, or even other Christians say about him. It is deeply personal: Who is Jesus for you today?
Christian faith is more than knowing about Jesus or admiring his teachings. It means trusting him as Saviour and Lord and seeking to walk in his footsteps in our everyday lives. So how would you answer Jesus’ question today: “Who do you say that I am?”
