Who Are You Looking for? / John 20:11-18

When we look into the story of the gospel, we realise how much simpler it is for us to talk about it compared to what the first disciples went through when they found the empty tomb. The initial Easter was far from straightforward and joyful. Mary Magdalene, encountering the empty tomb for the first time, felt confusion instead of happiness, mistakenly believing Jesus’ body had been taken without any real proof. It’s clear she wasn’t anticipating the Resurrection; her visit was meant to honour the deceased, not to search for the living. The sight of the empty tomb didn’t spark any thoughts or expectations of a resurrection.

Mary Magdalene was the first to find the tomb empty, followed by Peter and John who went to investigate after hearing what she saw. John got there first, taking a moment to peer inside without going in, while Peter went straight into the tomb. They were in the same location where Jesus’ body had been placed, yet it’s questionable whether they truly understood their discovery.

We might also miss recognising Jesus, just as Mary Magdalene didn’t realise it was him talking to her right in front. As we come together to recognise the wonder of the resurrection, we’re encouraged to be fully open to noticing Jesus’ presence among us. We’re called to not just look with our eyes but to also open our hands, hearts, and entire selves to him.  IL-WOONG.
