Jeremiah 1:1-10, Which is easier, to say yes or no?

Which is easier, to say yes or to say no to God?

In the Old Testament text today, we read about the call of the prophet Jeremiah. His call is undeniable. His call is personally addressed and divinely delivered. Yet Jeremiah’s first instinct, his immediate reaction to God’s signed special delivery, is “No!” Quick as he can, Jeremiah comes up with not one but two perfect reasons why he can’t possibly do what God has just announced to him. He resisted God’s call by making an excuse, saying that he did not know how to speak, and he was too young. He tried to beg off (vs 6).

Young Jeremiah perhaps had neither talent nor natural ability. Thus the calling of Jeremiah does not make real sense. It seems extravagant, even reckless. So Jeremiah was worried about his own inadequacy, but God promised him to provide resources that he would need.  First, the Lord said that He will be with him (vs 7 & 8); second, the Lord promised the words to speak (vs 9); and finally, the Lord promised authority (vs 10).

When God calls you, do not worry about your inadequacy, weakness, lack of spiritual gifts, or talents. What you have to do is that simply examine your hearts about the specifics of God’s call. Then you respond to God with honesty and sincerity. Whatever your response may be, He will accept you as you are. God will guide your further life journey until you are ready to take up the ministry which is on His mind. IL-WOONG.
