Luke 12:13-21 / What Will You Do With Your Blessings?
This Sunday we will explore Jesus’ parable of the rich fool, emphasising the dangers of greed and misplaced priorities. It begins with a reflection on dreams of wealth – such as receiving an inheritance or striking it rich – and questions what we would do with such blessings.
Jesus is approached by a man who wants help securing a share of an inheritance, but instead of intervening, Jesus warns against greed. He tells a parable about a successful farmer who plans to store his abundant harvest in bigger barns so he can enjoy life without worry. Yet God calls the man a fool, saying his life will be demanded that very night.
The lesson is not that wealth or enjoying life is sinful, but that hoarding blessings and prioritising possessions over spiritual readiness is foolish. The rich man failed to recognise that his blessings were meant to be shared. He trusted in his material security rather than in God.
There are two main themes: first, that wealth is a gift on loan, not a possession to be hoarded. Second, it emphasises the relationship between the heart and possessions. True richness comes not from what we own, but from being “rich toward God.” IL-WOONG.
