Matthew 1:18–25 / The Quiet Faith of Christmas
Today’s message centres on Joseph, the quiet and often overlooked figure in the Christmas story from Matthew 1:18–25. Though Joseph never speaks a word in the Gospels, his actions reveal a deep and courageous faith. Engaged to Mary and looking forward to their life together, Joseph’s world is turned upside down when he learns she is pregnant. As a righteous man, he struggles with what to do, torn between obeying the law and protecting Mary from harm. After much inner turmoil, he decides to divorce her quietly.
God then speaks to Joseph through a dream, assuring him that Mary’s child is from the Holy Spirit and calling him to take Mary as his wife and name the child Jesus. Joseph responds with obedience, trusting God despite uncertainty, fear, and unanswered questions. Through Joseph’s faith, Jesus is legally named and connected to the line of David, allowing God’s saving plan to move forward.
The message will remind us that God often works behind the scenes through ordinary people who choose faith over fear. Joseph’s story speaks to anyone facing broken dreams, hardship, grief, or uncertainty, especially at Christmas. A “Joseph kind of faith” trusts that God loves us, will provide what we need, and can bring good even from the most difficult circumstances. IL-WOONG.

Summer Church in January: From Sunday 4 January to 25 January, our 10.15am Sunday gatherings will take a different shape. We’ll be meeting in a relaxed, informal format, with a different theme each week – such as singing hymns, trivia, watching a movie, games and group activities.
