Luke 11:1-13 / The Prayer Jesus Taught: Trusting a Listening God
In Luke 11:1–13, Jesus responds to his disciples’ request, “Lord, teach us to pray,” by offering a practical and profound guide to prayer. He begins by sharing the Lord’s Prayer, a model that centres on intimacy with God, reverence for His name, trust in His provision, forgiveness, and a plea for guidance and protection.
Jesus teaches that we are invited to approach God as a loving Father – boldly, personally, and confidently. The prayer begins with honouring God’s holiness, acknowledging His kingdom and will, and trusting Him for daily sustenance – both physical and spiritual. It emphasises forgiveness as both a gift we receive and a responsibility we extend to others. It concludes with a plea for help in facing life’s temptations and trials.
To reinforce the importance of persistence in prayer, Jesus shares a parable of a friend knocking at midnight, showing that even reluctant friends respond to urgent needs –
and how much more will God, who is loving and good, respond to our prayers. He compares prayer to asking, seeking, and knocking, encouraging believers to approach God with persistence and trust. Jesus assures that God gives not just what we want, but what we truly need, most especially the Holy Spirit. The message calls us to develop a prayer life rooted in relational trust, humility, persistence, and faith in God’s good purposes. IL-WOONG.
