Mark 10: 35-45 / The Path to Success: Servant Leadership in God’s Kingdom

Mark 10:35-45 tells the story of James and John, two of Jesus’ disciples, who ask Him if they can sit at His right and left hand in His glory. Jesus responds by asking if they are able to endure the suffering He is about to face, to which they confidently reply that they can. Jesus tells them that while they will indeed share in His suffering, the positions of honour they seek are not His to grant but are prepared by God for others.

The other disciples become angry with James and John for their request. Jesus uses this moment to teach all the disciples about the nature of true greatness. He explains that, unlike the rulers of the Gentiles who use authority over others, greatness in God’s kingdom is defined by service. Jesus emphasises that whoever wants to be great must be a servant, and whoever wants to be first must be the servant of all. He concludes by stating that He came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many, highlighting the sacrificial nature of His mission and the example He sets for His followers.  IL-WOONG.
