John 3:1-17 / The More We Know, the Less We Know
In today’s message, we reflect on the encounter between Jesus and Nicodemus, a religious leader who came to Jesus at night seeking deeper understanding. Nicodemus was knowledgeable and faithful, yet he still had questions about the things of God. Through their conversation, Jesus speaks about being “born from above,” pointing not to a physical rebirth, but to a spiritual transformation brought about by the Holy Spirit. This reminds us that faith is not simply about knowledge, experience, or confidence, but about continual renewal in Christ.
Often, the longer we journey in faith, the more we realise how much there is still to learn. Like Nicodemus, we may begin with certainty, yet gradually grow into humility as we recognise the mystery of God’s work in our lives. In this sense, spiritual maturity is not about having all the answers, but about remaining open, teachable, and receptive to God’s grace.
During this Lenten season – a time of reflection, prayer, and renewal – we are invited to come honestly before God with our questions, doubts, and longings. Jesus does not reject Nicodemus for his lack of understanding; instead, He gently leads him toward deeper faith. At the heart of this passage is the assurance of God’s love: “For God so loved the world…” (John 3:16). This love is the foundation of our new life.
As we continue our Lenten journey, we are called to trust in God’s transforming grace, to seek spiritual renewal, and to live each day as people who are continually being renewed and “born from above” in Christ. IL-WOONG.
