John 17: 1-11, 20-23 / The Heart of Jesus for His People
In today’s passage, Jesus offers His final prayer before going to the cross – a deeply personal prayer for His disciples and for all who would one day believe in Him. It begins with the powerful reminder of what it means to know that someone is praying for us personally, before revealing the astonishing truth that Jesus Himself prays for His people.
Jesus prays for unity among believers: “that they may all be one.” In a divided world –and often a divided church – Christ calls His followers beyond political, social, racial, and theological barriers into a community shaped by grace, love, and shared faith. The reflection highlights how Jesus gathered very different people around one table and created a new family in God.
It also emphasises that Christian unity is not merely for comfort or fellowship, but for mission. Jesus prays that the church would be one “so that the world may believe.” True unity becomes a witness to the transforming love of Christ and a testimony to the world of God’s redeeming power.
Ultimately, believers are reminded that they are continually held in the prayers of Christ. As those sent into the world, Christians are called to live in compassion, humility, unity, and mission – trusting that Jesus still intercedes for His people today.
