Luke 17:11–19 / The Grateful Stranger
This week’s message centres on the story of the ten lepers healed by Jesus, focusing on the one – a Samaritan – who returns to give thanks. It contrasts the obedient response of all ten lepers, who act in faith by going to the priests as Jesus instructed, with the deeper response of the one who returns, overwhelmed with joy and gratitude.
This returning leper recognises that his healing is not just physical but spiritual. His response – praising God, falling at Jesus’ feet, and giving thanks – shows a heart fully aware of God’s mercy. Jesus praises his faith, not just for obeying but for going beyond the ritual to connect personally with the Giver of the gift.
The message emphasises that while all ten are healed, only one truly experiences the fullness of spiritual wellness – because he returns to say thank you. This gratitude becomes a gateway to a deeper relationship with God. We are called to live like the one who came back – recognising our blessings, returning to God with thankful hearts, and living lives that reflect our gratitude daily. IL-WOONG.
