Exodus 20:1-17, The First and Greatest Priority
The Ten Commandments are more than a list of rules; they are about our relationship with God. Before God gave Israel the commandments, God reminded them who he was and what he had already done: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” Grace came before the law. God had already rescued and redeemed his people before calling them to live in obedience.
At the heart of the commandments is love – loving God and loving our neighbour. Jesus summed them up in these two great commandments: love God with all your heart, soul and mind, and love your neighbour as yourself.
The first commandment, “You shall have no other gods before me,” therefore asks a deeply personal question: Who comes first in our lives? In the midst of all the demands on our time, energy and attention, God calls us to give him first place – not simply out of duty, but in response to the God who loves, rescues and redeems us.
