John 18:28-40 / The Cost of Compromise: Lessons from Pilate
In today’s text, Jesus is brought before Pilate, marking the beginning of his trial under Roman authority. The Jewish leaders refuse to enter Pilate’s headquarters to avoid defilement during Passover, illustrating their concern for ritual purity while condemning an innocent man. Inside, Pilate questions Jesus, asking, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus responds by explaining that his kingdom is not of this world, emphasizing that his mission is not about political power but about testifying to the truth.
This passage reveals a clash between earthly power, represented by Pilate, and divine authority, embodied by Jesus. Pilate’s confusion about Jesus’ kingship and his infamous question, “What is truth?” reflect humanity’s struggle to understand the nature of God’s kingdom. Jesus calls those who belong to the truth to listen to his voice, challenging us to align our lives with God’s eternal truth rather than fleeting worldly concerns. IL-WOONG.
