The Call to Follow

“Luke 9:51-62”

In today’s gospel reading, we can find various people’s responses in Jesus’ call. Three men were given the opportunity to follow Jesus, and each one gave a different excuse:  they wanted to do something else first, ‘bury a father, say goodbye to parents.’Their problem was not that they could not follow Jesus, but rather that they would not follow Jesus.

However, what Jesus points out here is that ‘following him’ is more important than other things, and what we learn from them is a great principle about obeying Jesus. Jesus wants our prompt obedience. There is no need for any introductions, and no other consequence but obedience to the call. Furthermore, Jesus also wants particular obedience. Whether you are ordained or not, every Christian has the same mission. Now not all of us have the same job, not all of us have the same vocation, not all of us have the same gifts, not all of us have the same calling, but every one of us has been called and given the responsibility of proclaiming and building the kingdom of God. Today, Jesus gives us the greatest invitation.  IL-WOONG.
