“On the Road to Emmaus”

Lugarno Peakhurst Uniting Church https://lpuc.org.au

Welcome

Good morning everyone! Today is the third Sunday of Easter and Easter continues for the 50 days up until Pentecost Sunday, that is on 31st May this year.

Chapter 24 is the concluding Chapter of Luke’s Gospel. In today’s message we will be looking at the resurrected Jesus and His meeting with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Jesus asks them some questions to try to ascertain where they stand mentally and emotionally concerning His resurrection that morning. Like the other eleven disciples, these two did not expect the resurrection and were discouraged and fearful of the Jews particularly after His crucifixion.

Jesus then proceeds to give them a unique message of what was said in the Old Testament Scriptures concerning Himself. That must have been some message. All this time they met together they were kept from recognising Him by God.  As they approached the village they prevailed upon Him to stay with them as it was nearly evening.

‘While He was at the table with them He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognised Him and He disappeared from their sight.’  They asked each other ‘were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’ What a get-together that must have been!
