Philippians 2:3-11

Over the last four weeks we’ve studied Church Wide series, Jesus the Game Changer and learned that Jesus has such a big influence on our culture and society and today we are looking at leadership.

Jesus is the greatest leader and greatest role model in leadership of all time. When we think of Jesus’ leadership we may come up with the word ‘humility.’ In John 12:12-19, we can find that Jesus enters into Jerusalem on a donkey’ colt, and it may show his leadership in humility. That is not the look that a king would necessarily want to portray as he rides into the city in glory but Jesus is like that. Jesus makes humility of a virtue of leadership. What we learn from Jesus is that the way to greatness in God’s eyes is a path of humility.

Today’s text, Paul’s Letter to the Philippians, 2:3-11 sums all up about how we are to be behaved, and what Jesus stood for. Jesus humbles himself, and God exalts him. God honours leaders who humble themselves. And we are called to be leaders, and show the kingdom of God to the world.

What does it mean to be humble leader?

* See verses 5-6, Jesus acted in humility and he always knew exactly who he was – the Son of God in very nature of God. The humble leader sees themselves who they really are.

* We read verses 3-4, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” The humble leader takes an interest in others. Jesus knew who he was, and yet his ministry clearly focused on people around him. He didn’t seek glory for himself. People matter to Jesus.

* The humble leader chooses to move down. Jesus humbled himself, he came down from the heaven to earth. He was the king of the universe, but came down to earth as a baby.

* See verse 7, “he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.” The humble leader gives oneself to serve others. Jesus washed their feet because he loved them with all his hearts, he showed that love by serving them, by teaching them, by honouring them, and lifting them up. We are called to serve each other and others in our community. When we have heart of Jesus, we love people, and when we are truly humble, and see the value of others, we want to serve them. That’s what Jesus does. That’s the leader. God honours who humble themselves, Jesus the ultimate leader.
