Run for the Prize

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 and Hebrews 12:1-3

In writing to the Corinthians, Paul compares living the Christian life to the struggles of a runner in a race.

The Corinthians of the day would know all about the Games. And also, all about the races in them. So too, the audience of the letter to the Hebrews, would be very well aware of all aspects of the Games and races.

A race, and the lead up to it, is not easy, so all the runners trained hard. In fact, if an entrant in the Games didn’t follow a strict diet and train diligently, they would be disqualified from competing.

The Corinthians and the Hebrews had different circumstances being addressed. But each were in danger of falling away from following Jesus.

Using a race as an analogy to living the Christian life, the authors of those letters exhorted their readers that when life was hard because of their faith, to be self-disciplined and keep their eye on the prize instead of their struggles, so they would see it through and gain the eternal life that God meant for them.  Alan.
