“Pray for those in Authority”
Paul writes to Timothy in Ephesus as both an encouragement, as he feels that Timothy is his “true son in the faith” (1:2) and to help him combat false teachings that had arisen there.
Chapter 2 offers instructions on worship starting with prayer. He urges that prayers of intercession and for thanksgiving be made for all people, specifically including rulers and authorities.
Do you look around at some of the current world leaders and feel challenged by this?
Then are we seeing through God’s eyes or human ones?
We read in 1 Corinthians 2:11 “…no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”
It is passages in scripture like this one that cause me to stop and think deeply about some of the harder parts of the Bible that I’d prefer to gloss over. How many times have we read Matthew 5:44 “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”?
Paul does explain why he says to pray for authorities, but if we read this passage quickly, we may miss it. … Alan
