Luke 6:27-38, Playing Outside the Box
Have you ever experienced that you feel very difficult to forgive/love someone or feel guilty for not being able to forgive/love someone? Today’s gospel reading from Luke 6:27-38, Jesus makes a controversial claim about treating those who believe and act differently: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” I think this statement is still as revolutionary today as it was back then.
How can we love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us and mistreat us? Jesus asks us to love beyond boundaries because Jesus knew that through loving our enemies, we would wind up loving ourselves. Moreover, we find strength by praying for those who persecute, mistreat us. When we pray earnestly, persistently, and lovingly for those who oppose us, something unexpected often happens. Through prayer we find the needed resource to love. Nothing is impossible, with God on our side. IL-WOONG.
