Luke 12: 49-56 / Peace or Division? Understanding Jesus’ Fiery Words
This week, we’ll reflect on one of Jesus’ most intense and surprising statements in Luke 12, where he declares, “I came to cast fire upon the earth…” and speaks not of peace, but of division – even within families. At first these words can feel unsettling, but in the light of his approaching crucifixion, they reveal his deep urgency and the cost of his mission. The “fire” points to transformation, purification, and the inevitable division that comes when not all will receive him.
Jesus is not a bringer of chaos, but one who fully understands the price of bringing God’s kingdom. While his mission is rooted in love and reconciliation, some will resist it. He challenges the hypocrisy of religious leaders who could read the weather but missed the clear signs of the Messiah, exposing their spiritual blindness.
As followers of Jesus, we are not called to judge but to be agents of reconciliation. He bore the burden of confrontation so that we could carry the yoke of love. And though the work may seem overwhelming, Christ shares the load and empowers us through his Spirit to be lights in a divided world. IL-WOONG.
Our Mission is to

Build each other up in faith; and to
