Matthew 14:22–33 / More Than Walking on Water
In Matthew 14:22–33, Jesus sends his disciples into a storm immediately after the feeding of the five thousand. Although they obey his command without hesitation, they soon find themselves struggling against strong winds and rough seas. Their experience reminds us that following Christ does not guarantee an easy or trouble-free life. Sometimes, the very path Jesus calls us to walk leads through difficulty and uncertainty. Yet the storm is never outside God’s control. At the darkest hour of the night, Jesus comes to his disciples, walking on the water, and reassures them with the words, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” His presence transforms fear into hope and reminds us that he is always with us, even in the midst of life’s greatest trials.
Peter’s decision to step out of the boat teaches us that faith is not about performing spectacular miracles or never failing. Rather, faith is responding to Jesus’ invitation with trust, even when circumstances seem overwhelming. Peter does begin to sink when he takes his eyes off Jesus, but he immediately cries out, “Lord, save me!” and Jesus reaches out his hand to rescue him. The focus of the story is not the strength of Peter’s faith, but the faithfulness of Christ, who never abandons those who call upon him. Our confidence rests not in our ability to overcome every challenge, but in the One who is always ready to hold us.
The story concludes with the disciples worshipping Jesus and confessing, “Truly you are the Son of God.” May we also hear Christ’s voice in every storm, trust his presence, step out in faith when he calls, and grow into a deeper knowledge, faith, and worship of our Lord.
