Build each other up in faith; and to
Become Like Jesus.

Luke 5: 1-11, Peter: With Jesus, Without Jesus

In today’s gospel reading, Peter “caught such a large number of fish that the nets began to break”(vs. 6) when he followed Jesus’ instruction: that was to “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch” (vs. 4).  What we find from the text is that without Jesus, Peter caught nothing but with Jesus, Peter’s boat almost sank with the number of fish he caught.

If we look at the Bible we could find Peter’s different experiences when he was with Jesus or without Jesus.  For example, Peter proclaims ‘Jesus is the Messiah’ in his journey with Jesus (Matthew 16:13-18) whereas he denies three times that he even knows Jesus in His trial (Luke 22:54-62).  Peter did not understand that Jesus had to rise form the dead at the empty tomb (John 20:1-10) whereas Peter heals a man who cannot walk in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 3:1-8).

As I reflect on the text today I am reminded of not only the call of Christ but the life in Christ. I would say that without Christ, I was nothing but with Christ, I am blessed to be a child of God; I am valued as a servant of Christ, and I am enabled to serve Him and His church.

What do you learn from the text?  Would you accept Jesus being with you or would you say ‘I’m ok, Lord’?  I guess I do not need to emphasise it again that you are called by Christ to reverse your priorities and reorder your commitments to build the Kingdom of God here in our community and beyond.  It is absolutely true that Christ calls you to be His follower who may have life in full; to be His servant who may fulfil His mission and ministry.  It does not matter whether a call and task from God is big or small; we all have an important role to play in the kingdom of God.  Will you answer His call today?  IL-WOONG.
