Knowing Jesus: Rediscovering His Teaching / Matthew 5:38-48
Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount continues to challenge the values of our world. While our culture often says, “Stand up for your rights,” “Get even,” and “Love those who love you,” Jesus calls His followers to turn the other cheek, go the second mile, love their enemies, and pray for those who persecute them. His teaching seemed controversial in His own day and remains just as radical today.
In this message, we will discover that Jesus was not simply giving us impossible moral ideals. He was revealing the values of God’s Kingdom—a kingdom shaped by peace, justice, forgiveness, humility, and self-giving love. As citizens of that Kingdom, we are called not merely to admire Jesus’ teaching but to live it, becoming salt and light in a world that desperately needs His love.
Ultimately, the Sermon on the Mount points us to Jesus Himself. He lived what He taught. When He was mocked, He did not retaliate. When He suffered, He forgave. Even on the cross, He prayed for His enemies. His life demonstrates the very love He calls us to embody.
Loving our enemies is not something we can achieve by our own strength. As we pray for those who oppose us, God transforms our hearts and empowers us through the Holy Spirit to overcome evil with good. As we rediscover Jesus’ teaching, may we also rediscover the grace and power to follow Him faithfully in our daily lives.
