Today my message is entitled ‘Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection from Matthew 16:21-28. I want to look firstly at Matthew 16:13-20 regarding Jesus seeking out a response from the disciples as to who people say he is. Names such as John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the prophets are mentioned. As He drilled down further Peter answered ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God,’ Jesus replied Blessed are you Simon son of Jonah for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood but by My Father in Heaven. In other words, Revelation Knowledge provided by God.
In Matthew Chapters 16 & 17 there is a significant shift in the subject matter in which Jesus was teaching, where it changed from the Kingdom and its beliefs to discipleship and the Cross. Peter sought to rebuke Him with a challenge to Jesus, which was remarkedly similar to that used by Satan following Jesus’ Baptism by John the Baptist. This was followed by His time in the wilderness, prior to the commencement of His earthly ministry.
Jesus then proceeds to outline what is needed to be one of His disciples. This involves denying oneself, taking up their cross and following Jesus. He closes by using the example of the transfiguration to demonstrate what will happen, when He comes again to earth.
