Following the Good Shepherd John 10:22-30

Shepherds are mentioned many times in the Bible. Jesus tells parables involving sheep and shepherds. There’s the parable about the lost sheep and the allegory about the sheep and the goats. Jesus uses the analogy about the shepherd knowing his sheep and the sheep knowing their shepherd. Sheep are mentioned 577 times and shepherds 113 times in the NIV.

Not only are shepherds mentioned in parables. Shepherds were the ones to be told by the angels of the birth of the Christ. Abel was a shepherd. Abraham and Jacob, Moses and King David and the prophet, Amos, had all been shepherds.

In Psalm 23, God is referred to as “my shepherd.”

In psalm 100, God’s people are referred to as “the sheep of his pasture.”

In the good news according to John, in chapter 10, Jesus calls himself the good shepherd, and he says, “my sheep listen to my voice … and they follow me.”

Who are his sheep and what does it mean to you to follow the good shepherd?

…. Alan
