Mark 12:28-37 / Faith and Reflection: Embracing the Questions Jesus Asks

Today’s text centres on Jesus’ response to a challenging question from a teacher of the law about the greatest commandment. Through this exchange, Jesus emphasises the profound importance of loving God with all one’s heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loving one’s neighbour as oneself. It draws a connection between this commandment and everyday life, encouraging believers to embody a genuine and consistent love for God and others.

The passage also illustrates Jesus’ unique way of answering questions, not by providing rigid answers, but by creating space for reflection and self-assessment. This approach invites believers to deepen their understanding of faith and discipleship, encouraging them to move beyond black-and-white thinking and embrace a love that includes justice, mercy, and humility.

Furthermore, Jesus’ question – “Whose son is the Messiah?” – challenges listeners to consider His identity as both the Son of David and Lord. This question invites personal reflection on who Jesus is to each individual and inspires a deeper commitment to discipleship. IL-WOONG.
