1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, Every Day, Every Way: Living with Gratitude

On this Thanksgiving Sunday, we reflect on Paul’s encouragement to “rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances.” In a world that often focuses on what we lack rather than what we have, Christians are called to cultivate an attitude of thankfulness grounded in God’s grace and goodness.

The message explores three reasons why thankfulness should be a defining characteristic of the Christian life. First, we are called to be thankful because God commands it. Throughout Scripture, believers are encouraged to give thanks to God for His goodness, faithfulness, and saving work in Jesus Christ. Gratitude is not merely an option for Christians; it is a response of obedience and worship.

Second, we are called to be thankful because thankfulness delights God. Paul does not tell us to give thanks only in favourable circumstances, but in all circumstances. While this can be challenging, especially during times of hardship, illness, disappointment, or loss, a thankful heart helps us recognise God’s presence and blessings even in difficult seasons. We can thank God for daily gifts such as family, friends, meaningful work, and the support of a caring church community.

Third, we are called to be thankful because it is God’s will for us in Christ Jesus. Thankfulness is not only pleasing to God but also beneficial for us. A grateful heart leads to greater joy, contentment, humility, and spiritual maturity. As we remember God’s grace, love, and provision, may we continue to nurture an attitude of thankfulness every day and in every circumstance. Il-Woong.
