Luke 1: 26 – 35 / Encounter: People Jesus Met, Then and Now
Today, we will focus on the theme of encountering God, emphasising that such experiences, seen throughout Scripture and in our lives today, are not unusual but should be expected. Using Mary’s encounter with the angel in Luke 1:26-35 as a key example, we will explore how divine encounters can be both frightening and life-altering. Mary, a young woman engaged to Joseph, receives unexpected news that disrupts her plans. However, rather than seeing herself as a victim of divine intervention, she embraces her role with faith and submission.
Over the next six weeks, our sermon series, “Encounter – People Jesus Met, Then and Now,” will feature testimonies of people from both biblical times and the present. Testimonies are powerful tools that give glory to God, remind us of His faithfulness, and strengthen our faith. The message also highlights how God’s plans often differ from our own, leading to unexpected blessings despite initial difficulties. Examples include Mary’s journey, Paul’s missionary redirection, and testimonies of faith today.
Mary’s response, “I am the Lord’s servant,” is presented as a model of surrender, paralleling Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane. The message will conclude by encouraging personal reflection, prompting us to consider how we have encountered God, how He may be speaking today, and how we will respond to His call. IL-WOONG.
