John 20: 11-18 / Encounter: People Jesus Met, Then and Now – 6. Redemption
In John 20:11–18, Mary Magdalene’s encounter with the risen Jesus beautifully reveals the heart of redemption. Standing outside the empty tomb, Mary is consumed by grief, mourning the loss of the one she had trusted with her future. Her sorrow reflects the deep confusion and despair many feel when life falls apart. Yet, in her pain, Jesus meets her – not with answers, but with presence.
Mary does not recognise Him at first. It is only when Jesus speaks her name that she truly sees who He is. This moment highlights that redemption is deeply personal. It’s not just about belief – it’s about being known, loved, and called by name.
But redemption doesn’t stop there. Jesus commissions Mary to go and tell the others, making her the first witness to the resurrection. Her encounter moves her from sorrow to purpose, from mourning to mission.
This passage reminds us that the resurrection is not a trick or illusion – it is the real, living foundation of our faith. In our own moments of grief, confusion, or longing, Jesus comes close. He calls our name and invites us into a new life filled with hope, identity, and mission. Redemption begins right where we are. IL-WOONG.
