Lk 23:32-43 / Encounter: People Jesus Met, Then and Now – 5. Grace
In today’s message, we will explore the meaning and power of grace, seen most vividly in the crucifixion of Jesus. While Jesus is nailed to the cross between two criminals, the crowd hurls insults and mocks Him. Yet, amid the pain and cruelty, Jesus utters a radical word of grace: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
One of the criminals joins the abuse, but the other sees something different. He acknowledges Jesus’ innocence, asks to be remembered, and hears the remarkable promise: “Today you will be with me in paradise.” This moment reveals that grace is not earned but given freely. It shows that even in our darkest moments, God’s mercy is still available. The grace offered by Jesus is deeply personal—it reaches beyond circumstances, reputation, and past choices.
The message emphasises that grace is not just a theological idea but a lived reality that changes lives, as seen in the testimony of Dwayne Jack. His encounter with Jesus brought transformation, not by following rules, but by receiving undeserved forgiveness. This grace still reaches people today, just as it did for the thief on the cross.
Ultimately, the passage reminds us that we can’t earn salvation. The thief had no religious credentials or good deeds to his name—only a cry for mercy. Yet Jesus responded with the promise of paradise. This grace is the heart of the gospel: undeserved, unearned, but fully offered. It invites us to trust in Jesus’ promise and respond with faith, knowing He is faithful and that grace changes everything—now and forever. Il-Woong.
