Lent 3/ Encounter: People Jesus Met, Then and Now – 3. Seeker

John 3:1-7

Today’s message will explore the theme of spiritual seeking through the story of Nicodemus, a religious leader who approaches Jesus with sincere questions. This encounter illustrates a timeless reality: across all cultures and eras, people search for meaning, purpose, and understanding of the divine. Nicodemus represents seekers of all kinds – those who deliberately pursue answers and those who stumble into the search without fully realising it.

Jesus does not offer Nicodemus a new set of rules to follow but speaks instead of transformation, telling him that one must be “born again” to see the kingdom of God. This idea confounds Nicodemus, showing that seekers often hear things they do not expect or fully understand. Yet Jesus welcomes such questions and doubts, meeting seekers where they are without judgment. Still, His answers may challenge assumptions or desires, as following Him requires surrender rather than self-reliance.

The message emphasises that access to God comes not through effort or good behaviour but through belief in Jesus and the movement of the Holy Spirit. It encourages all listeners, whether new to faith or long-time believers, to continue seeking Jesus with openness, even when His words differ from what they hoped to hear. Testimonies, including one from Heather Tomlinson, underscore the personal and transformative nature of such a search. In conclusion, you are encouraged to continue practicing personal reflection. Take time to consider how you have encountered God, how He may be speaking to you today, and how you will respond to His call. IL-WOONG.
