John 2:13-22 / Cleansing of the Temple: It feels like being rescued

Today’s gospel reading describes the event known as the “Cleansing of the Temple” where Jesus, angered by the commercial activities taking place in the temple, drives out the merchants and money changers. He overturns tables and declares that the temple should be a house of prayer, not a marketplace. When questioned about his authority to do this, Jesus mysteriously refers to himself as the temple that will be destroyed and raised again in three days.

There is a deep meaning to the cleansing of the temple. Essentially it has to do with the replacement of the old way of worshipping God with a new way of relating to God. The old temple was to be replaced by a new temple which was Christ himself.

This incident highlights Jesus’ passion for true worship and his declaration of his divine identity. The disciples later understand the significance of his words after his resurrection, realizing he was speaking metaphorically about his own body.  IL-WOONG.
