Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26 Called, Accepted, Changed
Jesus’ call of Matthew reveals the heart of the gospel. Matthew was not chosen because he was worthy, qualified, or seeking God. Jesus simply came to him and said, “Follow me.” The same Lord who forgave sins, healed the sick, and welcomed outcasts extended his grace to a tax collector and then shared a meal with sinners.
When the Pharisees questioned why Jesus associated with such people, Jesus answered that the sick need a physician and that God desires mercy rather than sacrifice. His mission was not to congratulate the righteous but to call sinners to repentance and new life.
This is good news for us. Jesus receives people not because they deserve his favour but because they need his mercy. Yet his grace does not leave people unchanged. The same call that accepts sinners also transforms them. Like Matthew, we are welcomed just as we are, but Christ loves us too much to leave us there. Through his gracious call, Jesus forgives, restores, and leads us into a new life of discipleship.
