Matthew 5: 13-20 / Be Part of the Answer
Reflecting on Jesus’ words, we are left with an honest and pressing question: what can we do in a world that feels broken, divided, and far from how God intended it to be? From environmental damage to injustice, conflict, and everyday cruelty, it is easy to feel overwhelmed or powerless. Yet Jesus does not call his followers to despair or withdrawal. Instead, he names them salt and light.
Salt and light are small, ordinary things, but they have a real impact. Salt preserves goodness; light drives out darkness and brings clarity. Jesus uses these images to remind us that faithful living, even in quiet and imperfect ways, matters more than we often realise. We may not be able to fix everything, but we are not asked to do everything. We are asked to do what we can, where we are.
In the message, we are challenged to resist the pull of apathy or compromise, or the temptation to retreat into private faith. Instead, we are invited to live differently: to act with integrity, kindness, courage, and compassion. Every act of love, justice, forgiveness, or generosity becomes a small but meaningful sign of God’s kingdom at work.
Ultimately, the message is hopeful. God has not abandoned the world, and He continues His work through ordinary people who are willing to follow Jesus faithfully. When we live as salt and light, we become part of God’s ongoing redemption, helping the world move – however slightly – closer to the goodness He intended from the beginning. IL-WOONG.
