Matthew 15:21–28 / Anyone Can Come from Anywhere
In Matthew 15:21–28, Jesus travels with his disciples beyond familiar territory into the Gentile region of Phoenicia. There, a Canaanite woman approaches Jesus, desperately asking him to heal her suffering daughter. Although the disciples want to send her away, she refuses to give up. She continues to plead with Jesus, trusting that he can help her. Her persistent faith leads Jesus to declare, “Woman, great is your faith!” and her daughter is healed.
This encounter teaches the disciples—and us—an important truth about the wideness of God’s grace. The disciples saw this woman as an outsider, but Jesus demonstrated that his compassion and saving grace are not restricted by nationality, culture, social standing, or background. Anyone can come to Christ, from anywhere, through faith.
The Canaanite woman also shows us what genuine faith looks like. Her faith moved her to action. Even when she faced rejection and discouragement, she kept coming to Jesus. Faith is not simply something we say we have; it is expressed through trust, perseverance, and action.
This story challenges us to consider how we see and welcome others. With Jesus, there are no outsiders. Our calling as his disciples is not to say, “Send them away,” but to stand with Jesus, who welcomes all who come to him. May we keep the gates of God’s grace open and become a community where everyone can discover that they are welcomed, valued, and loved.
