Am I a Good Neighbour?Luke 10:25-37”

This Sunday we are going to think about ‘the story of the Good Samaritan’. In the text Jesus is challenged by an expert in the law to interpret what one must do to have eternal life – life in God’s kingdom (Luke 10:25), and then who our neighbour is (Luke 10:29).

The focus of the parable is on what “kind of people we are to be, as we live on the lookout for those in need of help.” It is found that between the first two and the third characters in the story engaged in action differently. Whereas a priest and Levite ‘saw the man who left half dead because of being beaten by robbers’ and they “passed by on the other side”, the Samaritan was “took with pity on him” and then he took action to show his compassion and help the injured man.

The parable does not tell us whether the expert in the law did as Jesus told him to, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). Yet it is now up to us how we respond to Jesus’ commands: “love God, love others”.   IL-WOONG.
