Luke 13;1-9, A Fruitful Life
Today is the third Sunday of Lent. Our Lenten journey continues. Often the road has been stony and hard. Sometimes we have stumbled and even fallen. But God has been our friend and our guide. We have no cause to be alarmed. God is faithful to us, even when we are faithless. Today we rejoice in God’s faithful love, and together ask for strength and signs of hope and life. And again we are drawn together to celebrate the life that is ours in Christ Jesus.
In the gospel reading today, we read about the fig tree that had not borne fruit for three years, but instead of giving up on it as a lost cause, the man is convinced to give it another year. The lesson of the fig tree is a challenge to live each day as a gift from God, and it is related to the first part. What it teaches us is that the evidence of repentance is seen in the “fruit,” or how a person lives. So, when we turn to God, we have to bear fruits. At least if we are willing to turn to God, the Holy Spirit will help us and guide us toward a right direction. IL-WOONG.
