Mark 7:1-23, True Devotion to God
In today’s passage, we can find that washing the hands, so called a ceremonial washing is very important issue of life as well as religious rituals within Jews. In verse 2, when religious leaders from Jerusalem saw something done by the disciples was against the law, they asked Jesus “Why don’t your disciples follow the tradition of the elders?” (vs. 5). It seems to be a just question but it was a way to investigate Jesus to pick a thing that might enable for them to accuse Jesus.
In his reply, Jesus challenges them with a quotation from Isaiah 29:13 (vs. 6-8). It criticizes the people because they replace true devotion to God with human rules and traditions. In verses 14 -19, Jesus continues to debate with the teachers of the laws regarding the different understanding about the Jewish law and traditions. What Jesus points out is that if we keep our human rules and traditions with persistence it really becomes the disobedience of the God’s law. Then, Jesus highlights things that make us unclean in verses 21-23. What we learn from that is in order for our heart is to be clean we have to empty those evil thoughts from the heart and fill our hearts with the spirit of God.
In Jesus teachings, ‘heart’ is used as the central point and the most essential key word. In fact, ‘heart’ is most important word for Christians to ponder and grapple with in our practice of faith. Can we empty our heart to fill with what Jesus wants? Can we let Christ to be in the centre of our heart and life? I pray that our heart be emptied to fill with the Spirit of God; and Christ is in the centre of our heart so He directs our life in this journey toward the Promised Land. Amen. IL-WOONG.
